About Marilyn

Judge Marilyn K. Haan is currently the Presiding Judge for Cowlitz County Superior Court. As a Presiding Judge she oversees the administrative parts of Superior Court, Juvenile Court, Juvenile Detention and Drug Court. Judge Haan graduated from Central Washington University (Law and Justice/BA cum laude) in 1984 and University of Puget Sound School of Law in 1988 (JD). As a Superior Court Judge she has handled every type of docket and overseen countless jury and bench trials of all types. She previously served for over twelve years as a part-time Judge/Commissioner pro tem in Skagit County. Her prior experience also includes public service for various size municipalities as City Attorney/litigation attorney, deputy prosecutor and public defender, as well as private practice in primarily criminal, personal injury and family law. She served as the City Attorney for the City of Longview (Cowlitz County) prior to her appointment as Superior Court Judge in 2011 by Governor Chris Gregoire, so has currently been a Superior Court Judge going on thirteen years. She currently heads the Cowlitz County Superior Court Local Rules committee and Case Flow Management of the Superior Court’s Strategic Plan. In addition she serves on the statewide Judicial Assistance Services Program; Board of Judicial Administration (BJA); and the BJA Education Committee. Previously she has served on the statewide boards of the Superior Court Judge’s Association as Treasurer, Family Law Committee, Drug Court Committee, Small Jurisdiction Committee, and a variety of other committees. Locally she also served on the Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Legal Aid Board. Judge Haan is married to Tom Haan. Together they have five children, six grand-children and two great grand-children. When not working she enjoys traveling the world with her husband, spending time with their family, playing with their two Boxer dogs and enjoying the great outdoors.
